God’s salvation and storehouse of blessings.
There is therefore now… —Romans 8:1
God is righteous (Romans 1:1-16)
You are not righteous (Romans 1:17-3:20)
How can a righteous God let unrighteous people into His presence without compromising His character?
God gives righteousness to us (Romans 3:21-31)
Righteousness is given by trusting Jesus.
God’s example of righteousness given (Romans 4)
God’s righteousness is credited (Romans 5)
God’s righteousness is defended (Romans 6-7)
Christians are trusting in an alien righteousness, not their righteousness.
God’s righteousness is secured (Romans 8)
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. —Romans 8:1
We are in the beloved. When we trust Jesus, we are in the body of Christ
But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code. —Romans 7:6
For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. —Romans 8:2
Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out. —Deuteronomy 27:26 NIV
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. —Romans 8:3 NASB
By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh. —Romans 8:3
in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. —Romans 8:4
BIG IDEA: We are infinitely secure in Christ because of His perfect work on the cross.
STUDY GUIDE QUESTIONS
Have you struggled with God’s love? Or eternal security? How does this chapter help? How can we know we are eternally secure?
How does “no condemnation” relate to the doctrine of justification? (Explain what “justification” means for those who may not know).
What are the four things in Romans 8:3 that God does for those who are “in Christ?” Talk through and discuss. Spend time praising God for His work.
What would you say is the central point or big idea of Romans 8:1-4? What’s God trying to communicate about you? About Him?
Where did God “break in” and get your attention in the passage? What are you “hearing” from God? Where is He calling you to repent?
What is He calling you to do or believe?
Bonus: How much of the Law did Jesus accomplish on your behalf? If Jesus accomplished all of the law, does that mean that we aren’t under His Moral Law (i.e. 10 Commandments)? Explain why or why not.
