Key to this passage:

“Put off your old self… (v. 22) and put on your new self (v. 24).” See verses 17-24.

FOUR EXAMPLES OF CHANGING OLD WAYS FOR NEW:
1. Replace

with

Put off falsehood and speak truthfully… Eph. 4:25a NIV

Application: I will be

when tempted to hide… this week.

2. Replace with

Don’t use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don’t stay angry. Don’t go to bed angry. Don’t give the devil that kind of foothold in your life. Eph. 4:26,27 (The Message)

Application: I will

someone I resent… this hour.

3. Replace with

He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. Eph. 4:28 NIV

Application: I will

to someone in need… this week.

4. Replace with

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Eph. 4:29

Application: I will

someone with a note… today.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32

Question to ask yourself: What’s got to

for me to ?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. How would your family and friends know if you were going back and living in line with the old you? How would we know if you are embracing the new you and living in line with your new identity in Christ?

  2. The passage says to replace: dishonest living with honest living, destructive anger with God’s peace, stealing with generosity, speaking to harm with speaking to heal. Which one most stands out to you, and why?

  3. Are you holding on to any bitterness, rage, or anger? In what ways could remembering God’s forgiveness of your sins help free you from the bitterness or anger you have toward others?

  4. Why is it essential to “put off” old ways – and not just try to “put on” new ways? What’s got to go for you to grow?
