Psalms 9:1-20
9:9-10 | God as a refuge is a recurring theme in Psalms. A refuge or stronghold- sometimes translated “fortress” – is a high place of security and protection (1 Sam. 23:14-29). The Lord Himself is as secure as the best of these (Matt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5).
9:12-18 | The needy and the humble are people who suffer oppression for the Lord’s sake, bearing their affliction with a godly spirit. These are ones God has not forgotten.
9:13 | Death is depicted like an earthly city, surrounded by a wall, where people are held captive – hence the reference to the gates of death.
9:20 | The dread of a nation’s god was believed to precede successful armies into battle. For Israel, the splendor of God would overwhelm and defeat the enemy.
