INTRODUCTION
There are some big mouths in our culture today! The words we speak every day shape our life and our culture. Unmasking the nature of our words directly affects our quality of living − positively or negatively. Each of us must decide whether the words we speak will lead to life, success, and positive relationships or death, destruction, and painful memories. It is up to us and our big mouths!
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” —Proverbs 18:21
“My Big Mouth” will teach us how to choose our words wisely to create the life we want through unmasking the power of our words. During these collections of talks, we will learn how the words we speak transform the life we live.

MY BIG MOUTH WEEK #4:
Self-Talk That Honors God
“…For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. 35A good person produces good things from his storeroom of good, and an evil person produces evil things from his storeroom of evil.” —Matthew 12:34b-35
Self-Talk is the conversation you have with yourself in your mind. We do it almost all the time.
Research indicates that most people:
Speak at a rate of 150-200 words per minute.
Listen at a rate of 500-600 words per minute.
Think at a rate of 1300-1400 words per minute.
I.
ALL SELF-TALK
A.
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…” —Proverbs 23:7a (NKJV)
“A rich man’s land was very productive. 17He thought to himself, ‘What should I do, since I don’t have anywhere to store my crops? 18I will do this,’ he said. ‘I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there. 19Then I’ll say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself’.” “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared — whose will they be?’ 21”That’s how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” —Luke 12:16-21
B.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things.” —Philippians 4:8
“Ask yourself” is what I say to myself. Is it …
True?
Honorable?
Just?
Pure?
Lovely?
Commendable?
”The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.” —Proverbs 15:4
II.
ALL NEGATIVE SELF-TALK
A.
“and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.” —2 Corinthians 10:5
B.
“For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.” —Romans 12:3
-Do not think too much of yourself.
“The Pharisee was standing and praying like this about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people — greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.” —Luke 18:11
-Do not think too little of yourself.
“But Moses asked God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” —Exodus 3:11
III.
POSITIVE SELF-TALK
A.
“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food, and here I am dying of hunger! 18I’ll get up, go to my father, and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight. 19 I’m no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired workers.” —Luke 15:17-19
B.
•
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. 24See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.” —Psalm 139:23-24
•
“This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.” —Joshua 1:8
Six Truths to Preach to Your Heart

Conclusion:
What do you think about and say to yourself?
Speak These Words to Yourself:
I know that I am deeply loved by God. I am divinely appointed as His child, abundantly equipped to every good work, and cherished by God no matter what. The devil’s plans, schemes, and setbacks can keep me from God’s best for me.
As I follow the voice of Jesus, I will see the invisible, accomplish the impossible, and love the unlovable. I am a living, breathing miracle because Jesus Christ lives in me and nothing can separate me from the love of Christ.
Remember -
If Jesus Christ lives in me, I must speak for Him.
