STORY OF LAZARUS - John 11
Discipleship to the new convert is the ministry of unwrapping.
What does a newborn child need the first 45-60 days of his life to survive:
- Food, Milk, Nourishment
- Warmth, Care
- Changed Diapers
- Bathed
- Constant Attention
- Sleep (they sleep on their schedule)
- Love
- Shelter
- Parent, Caregiver
- Someone to monitor their development
- Interaction, baby talk
- Someone to Burp the baby
- TIME, MONEY, ENERGY
- Car Seat, Birth Certificate, Pass Health Tests
- They are assigned a pediatrician if the family doesn’t have one.
- Set up their next check up before they leave the hospital.
Sometimes even when we do our best at caring for the new spiritual babies, they will still not stay.
Sometimes well-meaning people run people off, saying/doing things they shouldn’t.
It is
MOST CHURCHES DO NOT HAVE GOOD NURSERIES FOR NEW CONVERTS
What would happen if God inspected us and looked at how we are caring for the children He gave us?
What do you call a person that likes to have babies, but doesn’t raise/care for them like they should? -
What do you call a church that likes to have babies, but doesn’t raise/care for them like they should? -
We can be a soul-winning church, but not a disciple-making church!
Matthew 28 implies that disciple making is our responsibility, not
If we are a disciple-making church - we will automatically produce soul-winners.
How do we disciple people?
It starts at the altar. If people don’t come to the altar or come to AN ALTAR in their life…everything else we do is just behavior modification.
3 Reasons People don’t get the Holy Ghost:
- Don’t Want It, Don’t Know What It is, They haven’t truly repented.
Steps with Guests at the Altar
- Pastor or Speaker “Opens Up the Altar”
- Altar Team/Campus Hosts come to the front and face the congregation
- Guest or member walks down to the front, or steps out into the aisle towards the front..don’t “GO TO PEOPLE” let them come to you!
- Trained Altar Worker introduces themself to guest, learns their name.
- Ask this question - “If God was to do a miracle in your life, what would it be?” (Or something very similar…to find out what you are praying with them about…don’t get into generalities, don’t be vague …pray for their need specifically.) What would you like God to do for you?, etc..
- Respond with, “ME TOO”. Then pray with them sincerely.
- If they respond and are visibly moved, Ask them, “Would you like to experience more of God in your life today?”
- If they say YES (step 9), then tell them the next step is for you to repent together. If they san NO, tell them what a great step it was for them to take today in trusting God to work on their behalf. It took a lot of courage for you to step out today, and God will honor your sincerity and faith today. If NO, skip to step 18, and follow up steps after praying with them.
- Ask them if you can lead them in a prayer of repentance? If they say yes, then remind them to pray WITH YOU…speaking out loud but using their own words as you lead them through it.
- Lead them in a prayer of REPENTANCE…if they are not speaking out loud, remind them to.
- Once they have repented out loud, especially if they are visibly being moved on by the Holy Ghost…continue to encourage them to keep repenting and when they have finished repenting to THANK GOD for the freedom and forgiveness they feel.
- If they start speaking in tongues, praise God with them until they finish speaking…and encourage them…that’s the Spirit of God on you right now.
- If they don’t speak in tongues, but they go back to repenting…let them go for a minute, but then stop them.
- Tell them, “Boy I feel better now, how about you?” (Because I repented and Jesus forgave me..and now I am free from that guilt.)
- If they are hesitant, then ask them if there is anything else that they need to repent for, then act accordingly.
- If they are willing and ready to move forward, then keep encouraging them to repent and take steps forward.
- When they finish…(be sensitive to their demeanor), tell them “I feel so much better, don’t you?” Explain to them what happened (either they got it or they didn’t…but don’t tell them. If they spoke in tongues, ask them if they heard the words that they were speaking? If they say yes, then ask, Did you understand everything you were speaking? (Some of those words didn’t sound like English.) The point is…are they acknowledging what just happened? Sometimes it takes people a few minutes to understand what just happened…sometimes they have to speak in tongues a few different times before they realize that what is happening.
- Whatever happens…whether you pray a prayer of repentance with them, they receive the Holy Ghost or not…when you are finished praying - YOU ARE NOT FINISHED WITH THEM…don’t let them just walk away…walk with them and then FOLLOW UP!
FOLLOW UP after PRAYING with Guests at the Altar
- Give guest (in the Altar or as you walk with them) a free copy of the 30 Days to Life book.
Pull the book back, to write down 5 points of contact in book.
- Your Name
- Your Cell Number
- Your Email
The Altar Worker receives the guests point of contact. (Connect Card in the back of the book). Very least is get their cell phone number and name.
- After exchange of info, if it is their first time… make sure they meet pastor right after service. Say something like, I want to introduce you to Pastor right after service ends. Then I’ll explain how this book works, etc..
- After they meet the pastor or ministry team member…
Sit down with them for a few minutes (2-3 minutes) to explain the 30 Days concept and the book.
- Turn to first day’s assignment, and explain. Doing Question #1 together.
- Set up a phone appointment with the guest for that evening or the next day. (Go ahead and call them right then. Have them enter name.) Call them at the exact time you set up with them.
- While they are still sitting there - set up a meeting to meet face to face before the next service. (Make it easy for both). Text, fB, App messaging Coffee, lunch, etc…stay in contact. (Can video conference as a last resort).
At the in person meeting outside of the church - discuss with them anything/everything that would cause a relationship to develop. (Find Commonality, focus on agreement, positive not negative, etc..).
- At meetings, review the last week’s lessons. Discuss it with them. Show them you love them. Interact with them about the questions, etc.. Show them the scriptures that set them free. (Unwrapping them).
Should repeat 7 and 8 every week…
Helping them to take the NEXT STEP…- Growth Track (Ask them if they would like to come with you to GT)
- Small Groups (Help them find a Small Group that peaks their interest).
- Again, you can attend a small group with them, or invite them into the one you are attending.
- If they have gone through growth track, then getting them activated on the Dream Team and making a difference using their gifts.
- Keep the relationship going with them, it doesn’t need to end. Pray for them, and encourage them.
