Luke 24
- Looking for Christ in the OT
Teacher/Preacher
- Wisdom
- Solomon?
- king
- Fits the bill
Remember your Creator
Before
- All these great things happen?
- So you can live right?
- So you don’t get yourself in trouble?
Before
…Things break apart
- Stuff breaks, colors fade
- Sobering
- Everything you buy will one day be thrown out
Solomon
- Had everything
- The stuff, the prestige, it wasn’t what it was cracked up to be
- Great kingdom, broke apart soon after his death
Jesus
- Matt 7
- End of the Sermon on the Mount
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” —Matt. 7:24-27
Notice how this is structured
- Just like in Ecc. 12
- The storm is coming
Question is how the house is built
- On solid rock…or on sand
Like the Teacher of Eccl.
- Invitation
- How are you building your house?
Other time in Matthew this idea of building comes up:
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. —Matt. 16:13-20
Jesus is building something
- On rock
- Rock is the proclamation of Christ as Messiah, the saving king
- When everything backs down
- When the gates of hell, try to attack
Jesus is truer and better Solomon
- Solomon worked to have everything, yet at the end he see’s how it breaks apart
- Jesus, gave up everything
- build his church on the solid rock
- Establish a people who remember their creator
- And have a way back to him
As we come to the Table today
- Remember your Creator
- When, not if, things break down
- He has built his church
- He will hold us
- Until the day we eat this with him
