2nd week of Lent

Prelude

Praise Song

Welcome

The People Gather
L: We are on a journey of faith. Jesus is our leader and our guide.
P: We place our trust in him.
L: As the weeks go on, our journey takes on a urgency.
P: We must prepare our hearts for Jerusalem.
L: Do not fear! God goes before us, into Jerusalem, into the world.
P: Amen!

Hymn

The People Pray
Lord, we come to you this morning with so many concerns and issues that demand our attention. Our lives are burdened; our spirits are tired. Guide our lives and our steps as we walk this Lenten journey, inward and outward. Help us to discern what you would have us do, that others may be healed. In Jesus’ name, we pray. AMEN.

The People Confess Their Sin
L: Before you, Jesus Christ, we admit how and where we have underestimated our influence, letting our words or silences hurt, abusing trust, betraying confidences.
P: Lord, have mercy; Christ have mercy.
L: We admit how and where we have made a show of our religion, attracting more attention to us, and less to you.
P: Lord, have mercy; Christ have mercy.
L: We admit to where in our lives a vague interest has become a dangerous passion, and we are not sure what to do or whether we are still in control.
P: Lord, have mercy; Christ have mercy.
L: Lord Jesus Christ, if we have looked or longed for an easier gospel, a lighter cross, a less demanding savior, then turn our eyes and avert our longing from what we want to choose to the one who has chosen us. Forgive our unfaithfulness, and, for our better living, give us not the remedy we desire tomorrow, but the grace you offer today. We ask this for your love’s sake.
P: Amen.

The Word of God for the People of God

Scripture
Matthew 27:38
38 They crucified with him two outlaws, one on his right side and one on his left.

Luke 23:39-43
39 One of the criminals hanging next to Jesus insulted him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”
40 Responding, the other criminal spoke harshly to him, “Don’t you fear God, seeing that you’ve also been sentenced to die? 41 We are rightly condemned, for we are receiving the appropriate sentence for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 Jesus replied, “I assure you that today you will be with me in paradise.”
