Chasing Carrots
Week 3 - “Comfort”
2 Corinthians 1 and 5
Anything you chase, more than you pursue Christ, is idolatry. —Life Church, Chasing Carrots
We want the things we want without any pain or discomfort.
Translation: We want to build a life where God is
Counterfeit comfort - the things we pursue
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. —1 John 2:15
Godly comfort - the comfort that comes from the presence of Christ
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ —2 Corinthians 1
14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. —2 Corinthians 5

We don’t pursue misery, we pursue Christ, and we let his love in us compel us to live differently.
1.
Embrace
– Stop avoiding suffering, and let it do its work (Romans 5)
– What if your misery is meant to become your ministry?
2.
Embrace the idea that this is
– Romans 8:18 - the suffering we endure now is nothing compared to the glory He will reveal later
– We can’t fulfill eternal longing with temporary comfort - that leads to an empty life
