Sermon Title: Running from God
Scripture: Jonah 1:1-3 (NIV), Matthew 12:38-41 (NIV)
4 possible reasons Jonah ran:
1. Jonah didn’t want to be a false prophet.
2. Jonah was selfish.
3. Jonah was a Jewish patriot.
4. Jonah hated the Ninevites.
God has invited us to the same mission as Jonah’s.
We are invited to partner with God in His Kingdom in order to bring shalom out of the chaos!
Additional Notes:
Jonah 1:1-3 (NIV)
The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
Matthew 12:38-41
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.
