The story of Noah and the Ark

(Excerpt of Gen 6-9) - Gen 6:9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man…and he walked in close fellowship with God….11 Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. …13 So God said to Noah…14 “Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out…17 “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die. 18 But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives. 19 Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood…22 So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him. 7:17 For forty days the floodwaters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth…24 And the floodwaters covered the earth for 150 days. 8:1 - But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and livestock with him in the boat. He sent a wind to blow across the earth, and the floodwaters began to recede…15 Then God said to Noah, 16 “Leave the boat, all of you—you and your wife, and your sons and their wives. 17 Release all the animals—the birds, the livestock, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—so they can be fruitful and multiply throughout the earth.” 9:12 Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. 13 I have placed my rainbow in the clouds…15b Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. NLT

Main Idea:

Build your family’s ark today, it will all prove worth it when it rains.

Lessons we can learn from Noah

1. The world is corrupt...Your family needs you to give them a better example…
  • 6:11 Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt…

Corrupt = to change from good to bad in morals, manners, or actions —Webster’s Dictionary

2. Noah went AGAINST the grain to save his family. God is asking YOU to do the same…

Going against the grain means drawing a line in the sand towards priorities…

        - We will be a family that goes to church
        - We will be a family that prays
        - We will be a family that serves
        - We will be a family that gives

You might be the first one in your whole family line to change course…

3. To make a difference in our family, we must overcome the greatest challenge of all…our own selfishness and apathy.

Matt 24:37-39 – 37 “When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 38 In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. 39 People didn’t realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes. NLT

Apply:

Noah saved his family by building an ark with the resources before him

Ways to build our families ark today.

  1. Keep developing a strong personal relationship with God

  2. Stay active in God’s work

  3. Be louder than the corrupt influences around them…

IN CLOSING:

Genesis, the book that contains Noah, was written by Moses and given to God’s people as the first of 5 books of the law after being freed from slavery

Gen 8:1 - God remembered Noah…

CLOSING CHALLENGE:

Build your family’s ark today, it will all prove worth it when it rains.
