Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

1. What is the Working of Miracles?

1 Corinthians 12:10, NKJV

Working of Miracles Defined:
• Divine intervention that alters our natural circumstances.
• Supernatural power to do things which are otherwise impossible.
• A supernatural manifestation of the power of God that alters, suspends, or in some way controls the laws of nature.

2. What is the Purpose of the Working of Miracles?

Exodus 14:31, NKJV
And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in Him and in Moses his servant.

3. Who is the Gift of Working of Miracles For?

1 Corinthians 12:11, NKJV
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

1 Corinthians 14:1, NKJV
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

Acts 6:8, NIV
Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people.

And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.

4. Where Can I Find This Gift of Working of Miracles in the Bible?

Miracles in the Old Testament (Elisha/Joshua)

2 Kings 2:21-23, NIV
Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.

2 Kings 2:24, NIV
He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.

2 Kings 3:15-16, NIV
“But now bring me a harpist.” While the harpist was playing, the hand of the Lord came on Elisha and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. This is an easy thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands.

2 Kings 4:7, NIV
She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

2 Kings 4:32-35, NIV
32  When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch.  33  He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord. Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s
body grew warm. Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.

2 Kings 4:43-44, NIV
“How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked. But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’” Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

2 Kings 5:14, NIV
So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.

2 Kings 6:6, NIV
The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float.  7  “Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.

Joshua 10:13-14, NIV
So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely the Lord was fighting for Israel!

Miracles of Jesus in John:
• Turning water into wine in Cana (2:1-11)
• Healing an official’s son in Capernaum (4:46-54)
• Healing an invalid at the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem (5:1-18)
• Feeding the 5,000 near the Sea of Galilee (6:5-14)
• Walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee (6:16-21)
• Healing a blind man in Jerusalem (9:1-7)
• Raising dead Lazarus in Bethany (11:1-45)

Miracles of the Early Church

Acts 4:29-30, NIV
Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”

Acts 5:15-16, NIV
As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.

Acts 15:12, NKJV
Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles.

Acts 19:11-12, NKJV
Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.

5. Why is the Gift of Working of Miracles Necessary for Today?

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…

Matthew 19:26, NIV
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
