“The Art of Hearing” Sermon Series
Week 4: “Hearing One Another” HPC @ Home Guide
PRINT GUIDE HERE
Scripture: Luke 6:27-38
Takeaway: God’s voice calls us to reconciliation.
Take some time to share:
• One thing that you are thankful for this week.
• One thing you need.
• How can the group help?
Bible Discussion: Read Luke 6:27-38
• Read today’s passage a couple of times.
• According to Jesus the Greatest Commandment is to love God & love others. In what ways does this passage expand on that?
• Which parts of this passage do you find yourself nodding in agreement? (Take a moment to examine how deeply you’re willing to follow that line of thought.)
• Which parts of this passage leave you feeling like you’ve been “called out”?
Application:
• So much of what we have heard from Luke’s gospel during this series is meant to remind us of how, as Christians, we readily agree with the words of Christ upon reading or listening; yet we often fall short when it comes to truly hearing & embodying the words of Jesus. Do you believe that we are truly capable of living up to the expectations that Jesus has laid out for his followers? (Hint: Read the next two verses in Luke’s Gospel vv.39-40)
• What do you think Jesus mean’s by “fully trained” in v. 40?
• Loving our enemies is not often something that we are “trained” to do. In fact, most of us are taught to draw lines of separation between ourselves & others in the name of protection, superiority, & flat-out fear (at times).
• In loving our enemies and making sacrifices for those we don’t often think deserve it or in ways that we don’t always agree with, we can end up giving up our own desires & personal freedoms and reaping little-to-no benefits in return; yet Jesus is clear—we will be held accountable for the gifts we give, not for how they are received. How can we give joyfully while also rejecting a feeling of victimhood when our gifts are not received the way we hope? Are our gifts truly gifts if we attach strings/conditions to them?
