Text:
John 19:28-30
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Matthew 28:1-6
1 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.
2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
4 And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.
5 But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (NLT)
1 Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it.
2 It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you—unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.
3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
MAIN IDEA: On the cross Jesus
A relationship with Jesus Christ happens when….
- I
REDEMPTION: When a person (a Redeemer) pays a purchase price for the one being redeemed.
Tetelestai: Gk. perfect tense: It is FINISHED or Paid in Full.
Jesus is our redeemer and He redeemed us on the cross. When He said “It is FINISHED” He was saying the work of redemption was finished! It can be translated “it is accomplished, I have conquered.”
PROBLEM: Instead of receiving God’s gift we create our own gift or try to add to the gift and present it to God.
Tetelestai “It is FINISHED; Paid in Full” It was an: Artist term, Warrior term, Legal term, Merchant’s term.
SOLUTION: RECEIVE by faith, the gift of Christ’s REDEMPTION.
2.I
Cultural definition of HOPE: A desired expectation of a future result. (founded in subjectivity).
Biblical definition of HOPE: an eager, confident expectation and desire for something good in the future. (founded in objectivity/ certainty).
Unlike the empty, dead hope of this world, this “living hope” is energizing, alive, and active in the soul of the believer.
PROBLEM: Misplaced Hope: What you place your HOPE in (source of your HOPE) will determine if you are HOPEFUL or HOPELESS.
SOLUTION: RESOLVE, today, to put your HOPE in Him alone.
3.I
This life is good, but eternity is so much greater!
PROBLEM: We stare at the seen and miss what is eternal.
SOLUTION: REACH for the REWARDS that are eternal.
In conclusion, “On the cross Jesus PAID the PRICE for our sin and shame, and through His resurrection PURCHASED for us a LIVING HOPE.” Maybe you are here today and you are far from God, and the reality is that you know it. And if you were to stand before the Lord right now, you know that your sins separate you from Him, and you are not where you need to be with God. I don’t want you to miss out on this moment. You see the reason your heart is beating out of your chest and you feel an overwhelming sense that you need to confess your sins, turn from them, and ask Jesus to forgive you and enter into a relationship with Him is because He is reaching out to you. He’s knocking on the door of your heart, saying, let me in, I have not come to harm you, but to heal you. I have not come to judge you but to change you. Give your life to me, I will never leave you. I have a plan for you, to give you a hope and a future. It’s better than anything you could ever imagine. If you receive me now, I will remove all fear. I will wash you clean. I will give you a new life. Today is your day, it is the day of salvation. Jesus changes everything!
