Returning to the Love of Jesus
Part of Sermon Notes

John 8:44

Genesis 3:4-5

Satan’s Lies:

1. It won’t kill you if you do it your own way.

2. God is withholding the best things from you.

3. You must create your own identity, find your own meaning and purpose; determine for yourself what is true, right, good, and beautiful.

Believing these lies always leads to idolatry. We end up enslaved to a disordered love.

The Lie: It won’t kill you if you do it your own way.

The Truth: Disregarding God’s guidance always leads to brokenness, despair, and death.

Romans 1:21-25

Romans 2:1-3

Psalm 1:1-6

Galatians 6:7-8

The Lie: God is withholding the best things from you.

The Truth: God has always desired that we share the fullness of His glory and joy.

Psalm 16:11

John 15:8-11

1 Cor 2:9

The Lie: You must create your own identity, find your own meaning and purpose; determine for yourself what is true, right, good, and beautiful.

The Truth: My identity, meaning, and purpose is established by Jesus Christ. He is the incarnation of what is true, right, good, and beautiful.

Colossians 1:15-20

Colossians 2:1-3

Colossians 3:1-4

One More Lie: It’s too late for you! You have strayed too far away and made too big a mess of your life. You can’t expect to return to the love of Jesus now; not with your track record.

John 1:9-14

Genesis 3:8-9

The Gospel Truth: No one “returns” to the love of Jesus. The love of Jesus invades our world, seeking the lost and restoring the broken. Humans have never sought to know the God who is, we seek to know God’s of our own making. The God who is became one of us to be known by us and to display the wonder of His love to all creation. This is the message of the Gospel, and it is the message of Christmas.
