Missional Values:

Week 1 - “We will be missionaries for Jesus in our neighborhoods and to the nations.”

Week 2 - “We will personally and corporately stay connected to Jesus.”

Week 3 - “We will raise our sails and position ourselves to catch the wind of the Holy Spirit.”

Week 4 - “We will radically love people one at a time as we use creativity and innovation to bring people to Jesus.”

Week 5 - “We will be authentic and honest.”

Which is more important to you: Attendance or Engagement? Or are you somewhere in between? Mark where you fall on the spectrum between these two values:

ATTENDANCE <———> ENGAGEMENT

Next Steps

  • I will connect this week with others to discuss the Digging Deeper resource.

DISCUSS

Take a few minutes to discuss the sermon you heard on Luke 9:57-62 by answering these questions:

  • If you had to explain the main point of the sermon to someone who was not there, what would you say?

  • Which points from the sermon connected with you the most? Why?

PRAY

Take a moment to pray out loud as a group. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead the discussion and teach you, both individually and collectively from the passage you are about to read.

READ

Read Luke 9:57-62

ASK

Answer these questions as a group:

  • Which is more important to you: Attendance or Engagement? Or are you somewhere in between? Mark where you fall personally on the spectrum between these two values:

ATTENDANCE <——> ENGAGEMENT

  • What are the three ways the would-be disciples responded to Jesus? How did Jesus answer each one? How would you describe Jesus’ tone?

  • Based on the passage, complete this statement: To be a disciple of Jesus you must be

    .

  • How did Jesus model everything He asked of the three men (and of us)?

  • Thinking back on previous messages, how essential is it that you “be the branch” and “catch the wind” before you put your hand to the plow?

APPLY

Take a few minutes to write down two or three steps to take this week to put this text into action. Share your steps with your group.

To put your “Hand to the Plow” means to work hard for the Kingdom, moving out of our comfort zone, getting “dirty in the field,” and engaging in the mission of the church. It means prioritizing Jesus and His call on us as disciples. If we put our hand to the plow, we value real engagement over mere attendance as we work and worship.

  • When the comforts of this world distract you from following Jesus… Hand to the Plow.
  • When someone forces you to choose between them and Jesus… Hand to the Plow.

Our Missional Value: “We will work hard and get messy.”
