1 Corinthians 14:1-3 (NIV)
Follow the way of love and eagerly desire the gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.
(vs.3) … the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.
The Spirit works through the one speaking to give another strength, encouragement, and comfort.
1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 (NIV)
Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.
When It Comes To Being On The Receiving End …
- Be gracious with the one sharing.
2 Corinthians 4:7 (NIV)
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.
- Seek the Lord and ask yourself a few questions.
Questions Like …
Does the content glorify God rather than the speaker, the church, etc.?
Does it contradict what Scripture reveals about the nature of God, who He is, or what He asks of us?
Does it strengthen, encourage, or comfort you or the group the message is intended for?
Was it spoken in humility and love?
Do you know if the one sharing submits themselves to the discernment and accountability of others?
- Allow Christ-centered friends to weigh in.
When It Comes To Being A Giver …
- Consider your “word” in light of the greater Word - Scripture.
- Share it in love and with humility.
