TWO HOUSES | TWO LAMBS | TWO CUPS
Reflections on the Lord’s Supper
November 20, 2022
Outline:
God speaks to us in SURROUND SOUND.
1.) Two HOUSES.
BETHLEHEM:
- House of BREAD = Hebrew: םֶחֶל י ת בֵּ Bet Lehem
John 6:35 - Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 6:33 - “…the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
- House of MEAT = Arabic: ب يت محل Bayt Lahm
Mark 14:22 - While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
John 21:15 - When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
2.) Two LAMBS.
- PASSOVER lamb
- LAMB of God
Passover lambs had to be Perfect (Hebrew: Tamiym), meaning without spot or blemish. They were considered complete, whole, entire, sound, healthful.
John 1:29 - The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Jesus is also the GOOD SHEPHERD.
Jesus REPLACED the meat sacrifices with His BODY.
Now JESUS is the GATEWAY to God’s salvation.
3.) Two CUPS.
Luke 22:42 - “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” (NKJV)
Cup of divine BLESSING & FELLOWSHIP
Psalm 16:5 - LORD, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing… (NLT)
Psalm 116:13 - I will lift up the cup of salvation and praise the LORD’s name for saving me. (NLT)
Cup of divine WRATH & JUDGMENT
Psalm 75:8 - In the hand of the Lord is a cup full of foaming wine mixed with spices; he pours it out, and all the wicked of the earth drink it down to its very dregs.
Isaiah 51:17-20 - Awake, awake! Rise up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath, you who have drained to its dregs the goblet that makes people stagger. 18 Among all the children she bore there was none to guide her; among all the children she reared there was none to take her by the hand. 19 These double calamities have come upon you—who can comfort you?—ruin and destruction, famine and sword—who can console you? 20 Your children have fainted; they lie at every street corner, like antelope caught in a net. They are filled with the wrath of the Lord, with the rebuke of your God.
Jesus deserves the Cup of BLESSING.
We deserve the Cup of WRATH & JUDGMENT.
Jesus “SWITCHED” cups with US.
Mark 10:38-39 - “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” 39 “We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with…”
John 18:11 - Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?”
1 Corinthians 10:16a - Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? …
Lord’s Supper:
1 Corinthians 11:23-24 - For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
1 Corinthians 11:24-26 - and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
