Isaiah: A Reason for Faith
December 12, 2021

Isaiah 6:1-3 - In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

1. That there is King.

• A King who is never going to die!

• A King whose glory will fill the entire earth!

• A King whose kingdom will never end!

Isaiah 7:14 - Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

2. The King is coming to be with .

Matthew 1:22-23 - All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him ‘Immanuel’—which means, ‘God with us.’”

Luke 1:26-37 - In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.”

3. Isaiah’s prophecy came !

Isaiah 9:6-7 - For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.

BIG IDEA: Jesus: Our King Who Overcomes

John 18:33-37 - Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?” 35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?” 36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.” 37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

John 19:2-3 - The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him in the face.

• There are two different Greek words that we translate into the word crown.
One of them is diadema. This is a king’s crown.

• They use the word stephanos. And stephanos is not the word you would use to refer to a twisted crown of thorns. Stephanos was a crown of twisted laurels and ivy. It is the crown placed on the head of someone who wins at the Greek games.

4. It’s a crown.

Revelations 19:16 - On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

But know this… When life feels uncertain and scary, we don’t have to fear because Jesus is our King. And if he were here right now I think he would say to you:

• I wore a crown of victory, even as I carried a cross.

• I moved the stone after the grave was sealed and shut.

• And I will stand in the midst of your chaos when you can barely crawl.

• Because I am your King of Kings and Lord of Lords, and I promise:
“I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” Hebrews 13:5
