Pride’s Undertow
1 Corinthians 5:1–8 (ESV)
1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. 3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. 4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
—1 Corinthians 5:1-5

2. Through the Right

- Have you ever been in a riptide or undertow at the ocean? Or have you ever seen someone else get caught in the undertow?
- Read 1 Corinthians 5:1-5. How would you describe the nature of the sin that Paul is writing about in chapter 5?
- What are some situations today that are morally equivalent to the situation in Corinth?
- What might have been the relationship between the Corinthian’s pride and their inaction in dealing with the sin among them?
- Why was mourning the right response to the type of sin in their midst? Have you ever mourned sin, either yours or someone else’s?
- What is the nature of pride and mourning that makes it impossible for the two to coexist?
- What does Paul’s instruction indicate is the right authority by which a church should remove a member? Why is it so important for a church to operate by the right authority?
- What does Paul say is the reason for taking these drastic measures of removing the member from the church? (v. 5)
What are some examples of churches today removing a member from the church for the wrong reason?
What are some reasons why churches today do not take up their proper responsibilities in this respect?
Close by reading and discussing the similarities between Paul’s word to the Corinthians church and Peter’s words in 1 Peter 5:5-11.
Close in prayer.
