Message Notes

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.” —Hebrews 11:8-10

Following God Fully…

  • It will usually involve unlikely people.

“Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran fathered Lot.” —Genesis 11:27

“Joshua said to all the people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods.”” —Joshua 24:2

“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.’” —Genesis 12:1

  • It will always demand sacrifice and obedience

“And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” —Genesis 12:2-3

  • It will come with great promises

What Did God Promise to Abraham?

1 – I will make you a great nation and bless you.
2 – I will make your name great and you will be a blessing.
3 – I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you.
4 – Out of your family line all of the earth will be blessed.

“In the same way, ‘Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.’ The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.” —Galatians 3:6-7

“So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him.” —Genesis 12:4

“Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but when they came to Haran, they settled there.” —Genesis 11:31

  • It may involve setbacks and distractions

“Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.” —Genesis 12:4-5

“being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 1:6

“Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan.” —Genesis 12:4-5

  • It will always require faith

“Is anything too hard for God?” —Genesis 18:14

“The Lord kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised.” —Genesis 21:1
