SIN & GRACE: EMPOWERING GRACE
Ephesians 2:1-10, John 15 | 08/27/2023

Salvation

We are

by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for our sin through his innocent execution on a cross.

Once

in Jesus Christ, our purpose as God’s image bearers is renewed and we begin to relate to God as king, savior, friend, father and more!

whom you’ll serve…

Our lives are opportunities to follow God or they are missed opportunities to experience the life God has for us.

God empowers us to live for Him through:

: through Jesus Christ we are no longer slaves to sins power.
• Jesus’ and – as the ultimate image bearer.
• His work in us. (Philippians 1:6, Hebrews 12:4-13)
• The work of the .
• Knowledge of His – the .
• Trustful – putting God’s word into practice. (James 2:14-26)
Him within us and around us.
Him in His work and giving us roles to serve Him.
Him and developing confidence in His love and character.

this to your everyday, real life

Make your life about

God, Him, His child and image bearer.

with the work God is doing to form you and “prune” you.

in – stay connected to God. Don’t let sin take control and keep you from the things God has for you. (John 15:1-17, James 4:7-10)

to whom : Christ died, not just for past sins, but also mistakes in your present and future. So don’t give up or let discouragement win the battle.

PASSAGES

Ephesians 2:1-10
1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

John 15:1-17
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
