BRIDGE

“Blindness” (Mark 8:22-26)

Progression of Spiritual Insight
This account of Jesus’ healing a blind man in two stages teaches us that physical healing and spiritual growth are often not instantaneous. Jesus could have healed the blind man immediately but made it into a process because He wanted to teach us a lesson about how we need time to perceive the truth.

Discussion Questions

Getting Started

1) Before you became a Christian, did you have someone who deeply impacted you? Did this person consistently touch your soul in a way that altered your thinking about Jesus Christ? What was it about this person that moved you?

Digging Deeper

2) Identify the progression of spiritual insight in Mark 8. Jesus provided food for people as the “bread of life” and healed someone who couldn’t see. Then, study Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Messiah. Finally, Jesus presented what it meant to be His follower (deny self, carry cross).

3) Three times Jesus spit to heal people (Mark 7:33; 8:23 John 9:6). What is the significance of the saliva? Jesus didn’t always use spit to heal the deaf or blind, so why did He here?

4) Read about all the times God refers to the unbelieving as blind (Matthew 15:14; Isaiah 35:5; 42:7; 2 Corinthians 3:14; Ephesians 4:18; Acts 9:9; 28:26-27; Isaiah 6:9-10; Psalm 146:8).

Applying the Word to Life

5) This week be determined to be a humble servant. Be focused on doing everything for God’s glory. If you are waiting to be exalted in an area of your life (job, pregnant, relationship, marriage), tell God that you will be content serving Him.

6) Do you need to be more patient with someone who is not maturing in their faith as quickly as you? How can you encourage this person to progress without being overbearing?

7) Do you have clear vision? Do you interpret and apply the Bible with simple authority? How easily can you answer questions about Jesus, the resurrection, our sinful state, and salvation?
