Matthew 16:13-17 says:
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
“Son of God” was thought of as a step above the claims of Messiah in the Bible, and one that gave Jesus equality with/as God. Jesus was ultimately crucified for a blasphemy charge because he was called the Son of God.
John 19:7 says:
The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

Jesus claimed to be God. His claim is either true or false. If it is true, then He is God. If the claim is false, then either He said it knowing it was false, in which case He is a liar, or He said it not knowing it was false, in which case He was mad. John ends his gospel by revealing the purpose of the Word of God, which is to prove and convince the readers that Jesus is indeed “the Christ, the Son of God”!
John 20:30-31 says:
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
