Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord
will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”


I. What’s in a Name?

Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain”

         A. We

the Name of God When We Enter Into Covenant
               Relationship With Him

              (Exodus 20:7)

Exodus 3:14-15 “God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: “I am has sent me to you.”’ God also said to Moses, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: “The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.” This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.”

                        Note: The Tetragrammaton is YHWH + ‘Adonai’ (AOA) = Jehovah

                     5. Through Irreverently God’s Name
                        (Isaiah 52:5)

                     6. Through Constant Complaining and Grumbling
                        (Malachi 3:13-14; Numbers 14:27)


II. The of Taking God’s Name in Vain

         A. It Affects Our

Romans 2:24 “For, as it is written, ‘The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.’”

Titus 1:16a “They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works.”

1 Peter 3:15 “but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make
a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence”


         B. God Takes His Name and Reputation Seriously

Exodus 20:7 “for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”
