Guest Speaker: Leon Skinner
“Weary and Rest”
October 10th, 2021


Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” —Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

“Weary & Burdened”

KJV – “Labor and heavy laden”
MSG – “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me.”

Jesus is talking to people that are weary and tired from life.

“He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me.” —Psalm 23:3-4 (ESV)

Jesus is talking to people that are weary from struggling with Spiritual decisions - something is wrong in their heart - spiritual weariness - carrying guilt or sin or baggage they do not need to carry.

“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. —Matthew 23:1-4 (NIV)

“…Work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” —Philippians 2:12 (NIV)

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” —Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

The Two Sides of Rest:
- “I will GIVE you rest.” Matthew 11:28
- “You will FIND rest.” Matthew 11:29
- Take my YOKE upon you and learn from me.” Matthew 11:29
- “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:30

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love may have power, together with all the saints to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” —Ephesians 3:16-19 (NIV)
