Sunday, Lent 2019 #3 - "REPENT!"
March 24, 2019

“There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.  And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” - Luke 13:1-5

Three Questions:
1.) What’s going on?
2.) How do we apply it?
3.) How is THIS hopeful?

1.) What’s going on? Those “Galileans”

POINT:
They need to repent of their

, their and their of the heart and character of God!

2.) How do we apply this?
Remember: Repentance is the act of turning away

and turning something.

  • “ALL have fallen short of the glory of God” - Romans 3:23

“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’  I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” - Luke 18:10-14

  • “He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.” - Psalm 103:10

3.) How is this hopeful AND missional?

POINT: When Jesus calls us to repentance, that’s the

of the Gospel!

POINT: The Gospel is the invitation to believe in the

for us!
