Mark 4:3-9; 13-20 Sermon notes
March 18, 2023

A parable uses an every day part of life in sharing the Gospel. Here, Jesus uses a Palestinian farmer who is sowing seeds in his field. He would have a leather bag, and then generously cast his seeds out as he walked through the prepared fields. Whiile trying to be careful, some of the seed would land in different types of soil that would not produce fruit.

Here Jesus provides evidence of genuine salvation, and life changing faith.

  1. The wayside (15). The wayside is the road around the field (today), or in their case the foot path throughtout the prepared field. Because of this foot traffic, the ground would become very hard, making it impossible for the seed to penetrate.
  2. The stony ground (16-17) This stony ground is like grass that grows on a sidewalk or some type of stone. There is no room for deep roots, and the heat quickly parches the plant causing it to die.
  3. The thorns (18-19) This is not a thicket, but rather these are the roots of the weeds that have been removed. They grow together with the seed that is planted, eventually overtaking and overpowering the nutrients needed for the seed to become fruitful.
  4. The prepared ground (20) This is the ground that has been prepared. Here the seed grows and produces fruit.

The one thing that always sticks out to me is this: no matter where you might fit in, there is still an opportunity for you to repent and commit your life to Jesus. All you have to do is come.

As Christians we have been called to sow. So we must sow:
1. gernerously.
2. passionately.
3. and patiently.
