Pray!
As Pharaoh approached, the people of Israel looked up and panicked when they saw the Egyptians overtaking them. They cried out to the Lord, and they said to Moses, “Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren’t there enough graves for us in Egypt? What have you done to us? Why did you make us leave Egypt? Didn’t we tell you this would happen while we were still in Egypt? We said, ‘Leave us alone! Let us be slaves to the Egyptians. It’s better to be a slave in Egypt than a corpse in the wilderness!’ ” —Exodus 14:10-12 NLT
Earnest Prayers
- Job seeking God’s mercy (Job 8:5-6)
- Jairus when he begged Jesus to heal his daughter (Mark 5:22-23)
- Elijah praying about rain (1 Kings 18-19)
- Jesus prayed earnestly when he prepared for his death (Luke 22:44)
As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.
Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” —Mark 4:35-40 NLT
Jesus’ disciples are a whole lot like the Israelites.
1. Both praying at the sea
2. Both praying out of fear for their lives
3. Both praying from the depths of the souls
4. Both had a lack of faith
United
The Israelites were in crisis in Exodus 14, and their seaside cry was urgent, united, unfeigned, but unbelieving. —Robert J. Morgan. The Red Sea Rules (p. 45). Thomas Nelson. Kindle Edition.

Go Beyond the Sermon…
All summer, there will be daily devotions to help you take the sermon into your day-to-day life. Keep up through the church app, website, or on our social pages.
Questions to Ponder:
Can you think of a time when you cried out to the Lord in a moment of desperation or need? Jot down your recollection of the occasion.
The same words found in Exodus 14:10 (the Israelites saw, were afraid, and cried out) are also used of Peter’s attempt to walk on the Sea of Galilee in Matthew 14:30. How can prayer help us transition from panic to peace, and from peace to praise?
Does God welcome crisis-time praying? Base your answer on 1 Peter 5:6–7.
Think of and jot down one or two practical ways in which you can implement a stronger set of prayer habits during this period in your life.
