O Come Let Us Adore Him for His Mission

Matthew 1:20-21

Our message last week was about adoring Him for His wonderful powerful miraculous name. The angel said to Joseph, “And you shall call His name JESUS…

Our text today is the next phrase of vs. 21…

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save his people from their sins.”

Let’s talk about 3 phrases in that short little verse that reveal the Christmas Mission of Jesus.

I. JESUS’S MISSION IS ABOUT

- … ‘His people’…

Certainly, Matthew is speaking about the JEWISH PEOPLE…

JESUS - (Matthew 15:24) - “I was sent to the lost sheep of the House of Israel…”

But thanks be to God that Jesus also said…

(John 10:16) - And OTHER SHEEP I have which are not of this fold (the Jewish sheepfold); THEM ALSO (believing Gentiles) I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd…

‘His people’ are BOTH lost

AND lost !

(Matthew 9:10-11; Matthew 9:12-13; 1 Timothy 1:15; Acts 16:31)

Notice secondly…

“He shall save His people from their sins…”

II. JESUS’S MISSION IS ABOUT SINNERS WHO NEED

-
‘He shall SAVE…’

The Bible says 3 things about our lostness…

1. We are sinners by

(Psalm 51:5)

2. We are sinners by

(James 4:17)

3. We are sinners incapable of

ourselves

(Ephesians 2:8-9; Isaiah 64:6)

The word “lost” is the Greek word “appolumi” and means to be utterly destroyed or useless. It is the same word used in John 3:16 “perish”

(Romans 3:23; Psalm 53:2-3; Ecclesiastes 7:20)

III. JESUS’S MISSION WAS ABOUT SAVING SINNERS…FROM THEIR

.

There are 4 things you need to know about sin…

Sin is

Sin is

Sin is

Sin is

When God saw our sin ravaged hell-bound souls HE SENT A SAVIOR!

He’s been seeking you even in your sin and rebellion!

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” because He came to seek us and redeem us back to Himself. (John 1:14)

(See 2 Corinthians 5:17)

“And you will call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

He will

you !
