SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE
CONVERSATION STARTER
Where are you seeing generosity or giving that strengthens and equips our church family? In what way is the body of Christ being strengthened and equipped through generosity or giving at our church? How can Gateway Church be thought of as a generous church?
DEEPER
Read Romans 12:4-8
Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-4. How would you describe the circumstances and the attitude of the churches in Macedonia? What does it mean that the grace of God was bestowed on these churches?
Read 2 Corinthians 8:9. What does it mean that Jesus was rich, “yet for your sakes he became poor”? How can we “through his poverty” become rich?
Name at least 7 gifts from Ephesians 1:7-14 that make believers rich. How do these gifts make you feel?
Why did Jesus say “it is more blessed to give than to receive”? See 2 Corinthians 9:6-8.
Read I Timothy 6:6-11 and 6:17-19. What instructions did Paul give to believers in general? What instructions did he give to the rich? In verse 17, what does it mean to trust in uncertain riches? What are “all things to enjoy” that are given richly by the living God?
What opportunities is God placing in your life now for you to give generously for his glory?
As there is false teaching and false prophecy, there can also be false or counterfeit generosity. Why would a person or group fake generosity? Read Matthew 6:1-4.
What inspires true, pure, joyful generosity? How does it differ from counterfeit generosity?
What stood out to you in this week’s sermon? What were your biggest takeaways?
Group prayer activity: Pray for opportunities for your group members, led by the Holy Spirit, to give generously and with joy for the glory of God. Pray for God to generously pour out favor, grace, mercy, and kindness on (name) by drawing them near to himself and giving them the gift of eternal life.
