New Year’s Teaching
God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. For this good news—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God. For only we who believe can enter his rest. —NLT Hebrews 4:1–3
A few thoughts related to Biblical rest:
1. Make work-rest your pattern for living.
Rest works best when it is tied to our greater purpose.
The LORD has made everything for his own purposes, —NLT Proverbs 16:4
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. —NLT Ephesians 2:10
2. Our ultimate purpose is to bring people to Jesus so that they may find salvation.
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. —ESV 2 Peter 3:9
3. Go easy this year.
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” —NLT Matthew 11:28–30
Two things required to be more present:
1. Investment
2. A surrendered spirit ready to grow and seeking to change
