MY NOTES

Living In The Light

  • Psalms 119:163 GW
[163] I hate lying; I am disgusted with it. I love your teachings.

  • Psalms 119:163 CEV
[163] I can’t stand liars, but I love your Law.

Question- So why does God hate lying? The answer: because lying is the epitome of living in the dark. Lying conceals the truth and keeps sin from being exposed to the light.

  • John 8:12 NLT
[12] Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

  • 1 John 5:19 NLT
[19] We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.

  • Isaiah 60:2-3 NLT
[2] Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the LORD rises and appears over you. [3] All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.

  • Colossians 1:9-14 NIV
[9] For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives [10] so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God [11] being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience [12] and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.[13] For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

MY NOTES

We live in a world at war! There is a kingdom of darkness (The world is enshrouded by it) but there is a kingdom of light that God desperately desires us to inherit.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.

  • John 3:1-10 NLT
[1] There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. [2] After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.” [3] Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” [4] “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” [5] Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. [6] Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. [7] So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ [8] The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” [9] “How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked. [10] Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things?

  • John 3:16-21 NLT
[16] “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. [17] God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.[18] “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.[19] And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. [20] All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. *[21] But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”*

MY NOTES

Point # 1. There is no judgment when you live in the light.

  • John 3:17-19 NLT
[17] God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. [18] “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. [19] And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

Judgment - Kreesis or Krino
*A.* An opinion or decision given especially concerning justice and injustice, right or wrong.
B. Sentence of condemnation, damnatory judgment, condemnation and punishment
C. (Also) a separating, sundering, or a separation to a trial, test, or contest.

Point # 2. Everything done in secret (darkness) will be brought to the light!

MY NOTES

  • Mark 4:22 NLT
[22] For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light.

Why do people love darkness more than light?

  1. It makes them feel safe
  2. They don’t have to expose themselves
  3. They don’t have to be accountable
  4. They think they can slide under the radar

Don’t buy into this lie!

  • Luke 12:2-3 NLT
[2] The time is coming when everything that is covered up will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all. [3] Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for all to hear!

MY NOTES

3 things that help keep living in the light

1: Don’t excuse sin.

  • James 4:17 NIV
[17] If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

2: Don’t participate in worldly activities. (Don’t participate in the things these people do)

  • Ephesians 5:11 NLT
[11] Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.

  • Luke 11:34 NLT
[34] “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when it is unhealthy, your body is filled with darkness.

MY NOTES

  • 2 Corinthians 6:14 NLT
[14] Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?

3: Carefully determine what pleases the Lord…

  • Ephesians 5:10-14 NLT
[10] Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. [11] Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. [12] It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. [13] But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them [14] for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

Point #3. We are free from the power of sin when we live in the light.

MY NOTES

  • Ephesians 5:6-9 NLT
[6] Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. [7] Don’t participate in the things these people do. [8] For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! [9] For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:5 NLT
[5] For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night.

  • 1 Peter 2:9 NLT
[9] But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

  • John 12:46 NLT
[46] I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.
