I AM…Rescuing - Message Study Questions
Message Summary
When the people of God cry out to God, God rescues them. Our God is a rescuer. In Exodus, God rescues his people from literal slavery in all its brutal ugliness. “I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.” (Ex 6:6b) In the New Testament and today, God also rescues His people from slavery to sin. Pharaoh stubbornly refused to acknowledge God despite the miraculous plagues.
Today, believers cry out to God for salvation from sin and death. And God answers. We are covered by the blood of Jesus. Jesus is the lamb who died on the cross to save us. We are covered under his blood so that the judgment of God passes over us. “For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:21NLT2).
How do you feel when you talk to someone and it’s obvious they aren’t listening to you? How good of a listener are you?
What do you need rescue from today?
Consider This
Pharaoh refused to listen to and obey God, and he paid the price. The Israelites were reluctant to trust God at first, but then they did. They carefully followed God’s instructions, and they were blessed beyond what they could imagine.
Read John 8:34, Romans 6:19, 16:18, Hebrews 2:15. How are people slaves to sin today? What do they have to do to be delivered from the judgment of eternal death?
Why do you think the plagues didn’t change Pharaoh’s heart? What are some reasons people might refuse to listen to God and obey Him today?
Read Exodus 6:6-8 and explain how each part is also a foreshadowing (type) of what the Lord Jesus does for people today.
Up to the plague of gnats (3rd of 10), Pharaoh’s magicians were able to duplicate Moses’ miracles. Do you think that unbelievers can do convincing miracles today? How?
The Passover lamb is a type of the ultimate sacrifice for sin, Jesus Christ. “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29 NLT). Compare and contrast the following.
- Exodus 12:5 and 1 Peter 1:18-19
- Exodus 12:7, 13 and Hebrews 9:22, 10:14
- Exodus 12:8-11 and John 6:51-58
- Exodus 12:21-23 and Luke 22:19-20
What does the unleavened bread of Exodus 12:33-34 symbolize? (see Luke 12:1 and 1 Corinthians 5:7-8)
To actually obtain deliverance from the death plague (Exodus 12:21-23), the Hebrews had to both believe and obey God through Moses.
- What do people need to do to make Christ their Passover Lamb today?
- Read Hebrews 9:14-15 and Revelation 5:13. What should be your response to the imagery of the sacrificial lamb and what Jesus did for you on the cross?
- What happens when we obey God?
- What do people need to do to make Christ their Passover Lamb today?
What happened when Pharaoh rejected God’s clear commands? Can you think of a situation where someone refused to listen to God and it hurt others?
Moving Forward – Application
“In the Bible we find Jesus, the apostles, and the prophets often holding apparently conflicting ideas in tension. A prime example is divine sovereignty versus human responsibility.
This is a logical contradiction for Greek-minded people, but for the Hebrew mind it is a profound paradox to be held together. ‘Both… and,’ not ‘either/or,’ is often the biblical viewpoint.”
