Genesis 2:1-3 - Sabbath Rest

We work because we are over the earth. We rest because we are of the earth. We do both because we are under God.

A Brief History of Sabbath

Institution at Creation (Genesis 2:2-3)
Inclusion in the Old Covenant (Deuteronomy 5:12-15, Exodus 20:8-11)
Clarification by Christ: A Blessing, not a Burden (Mark 2:23-3:6, etc.)
Modification under the New Covenant (Col. 2:16-17, Rom. 14:5-8, Gal. 4:9-11)
No longer necessarily applied to the seventh day (Col. 2:16-17)
Pattern of applying it to the first day (Mark 16:2, Acts 20:7, 1 Cor. 16:2, Rev. 1:10)
Consummation in Christ (Hebrews 4:9-11)
Now by faith, as we rest from our works
Eternally in the Promised Land

Two Principles

God finishes his work.

We need rest from work, since our strength is limited.

Implications

Appropriate Rest: Sabbath is being like God by finishing work.

Happy Rest: Sabbath is blessed for our good.

Holy Rest: Sabbath is sanctified for God’s glory.
