Faith: It’s Not Optional, It’s Essential
- Hebrews 11:6
And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
For the life of the Christian believer, faith is not optional…it’s essential!
Definition of faith: Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
- Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hypostasis - Substance: Steadfast, foundational, resolute, complete trust and assurance.

THE PITFALLS OF FAITH
I lose faith when…
1) I look at my problems more than I look to God.
- Hebrews 12:1-2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

But my eyes are fixed on You, O GOD the Lord. In You I seek refuge; do not leave my soul defenseless.
I lose faith when…
2) When I put my faith/trust/hope in something other than God.
- Psalms 91:1-16
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished. If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”

So how do we grow our faith? We have to DARE to be different!

- Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

2) Anything is possible with God
Matthew 19:26
But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”Luke 1:37

Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.

3) Resurrection brings certainty
- 1 Peter 1:3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
A) That we are justified before God Romans 4:25 (ESV) He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
B) Union with Jesus. Romans 6:8 (ESV) Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.
C) Death is defeated. Romans 6:9 (ESV) For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over Him.
D) We’ll Be Raised To Life As Well! 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 NIV For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
To grow our faith we have to be DARING.
4) Expect good is on it’s way.
- Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
