Ice Breaker:
“Nativity Sets”
At the beginning of Scotty’s message, he showed several “versions” of nativity sets he has seen over the years as a pastor. (little cats, rubber ducks, Star Wars and full-on Irish sets with wise men bringing clover, pots of gold and Guinness). Does (or did) your family have a nativity set that you set out at Christmas? Any creative versions or memories?
Summary:
As pastor Scotty kicks off our new series, Down To Earth, he explored the theme of humility displayed in the life of Jesus in the Christmas story. Scotty emphasized that humility is a choice to serve and bless others, not a loss of self-worth. Jesus is presented as the ultimate example of humility, willingly giving up his divine status for the sake of others. We were encouraged to cultivate humility by understanding and receiving the grace of Jesus, valuing others above ourselves, and surrendering our lives to serve and bless others.
Texts:
Philippians 2:3-11; John 13:3-6; Ephesians 2:8-9; Proverbs 22:4; 2 Chronicles 7:14; James 4:10
Discuss:
- Did anything stick out to you from the sermon, or did you have any questions?
The Christmas story illustrates the humble nature of God, who became a helpless baby born in poverty rather than as royalty. How does this picture of humility challenge our perception of greatness?
If you were God, how might you have done things differently? What expectations did people have for how God would work in the world?
(use of power, strength, more populated time, larger city, more influential family)
Read John Dickson’s definition of humility that Scotty shared in his message: “The choice to forgo your status, deploy your resources, or use your influence for the good of others before yourself.” Jesus provides a living definition of this humility described by Paul in Philippians 2:3-11. Have someone read this passage before discussing the next question.- Scotty explained that humility doesn’t diminish one’s worth; instead, it redirects it towards serving and blessing others. It’s a choice. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be humility it would be humiliation. Why is true humility not about thinking poorly of yourself or just curbing your ambitions?
Philippians 2:3-4 warns against the sin of pride and arrogance that has plagued the Church throughout history, leading to detrimental consequences. Can you think of a few examples in history of this type of behavior? How about examples in your own life?
Scotty emphasized that true humility comes from surrendering the need for self-glory to Jesus and understanding his unconditional love, sacrifice, and forgiveness. When have you experienced the grace of Jesus in your life, and how has that changed your perspective on humility?
Scotty concluded his message by reminding us that seeking self-glory never satisfies, but when believers give their lives to serve and bless others, they experience true glory because they reflect the character of a serving God. What is one practical way you can live out a humble life this week, reflecting the character of a serving God?
