Humility
Week: 5
Part of Hard Fought
March 27, 2025

Humility is hard.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Matthew 5:3

It’s a Fight to Recognize Our Dependence on God - That’s Humility.

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10

Humility acknowledges that God is in control, not us.
It means surrendering our pride, plans, and self-sufficiency to Him.

Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. John 5:19

It’s a Fight to Value Others Above Ourselves - That’s Humility

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

Humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.
Humility puts others’ needs and well-being before our own.

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 13:12-17

It’s a Fight to Have a Servant’s Heart - That’s Humility

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

Jesus chose servanthood.
True humility leads to selfless actions and love for others.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature[a]God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b]of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross! Philippians 2:5-8

It’s a Fight Trusting in God’s Plan, Not Our Own - That’s Humility

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5-6

Humility acknowledges that God’s ways are higher than ours.
Humility releases control and trusts in God’s timing and provision.

He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. Matthew 26:37-44

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

“I want you to want what I want MORE than what you want.”
