Message: Son of God/Son of Man
Scripture
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. —Luke 1:32-35 (NIV)
13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. —Daniel 7:13-14 (NIV)
Notes
- Why it isn’t
Genesis 15:2-4 - “But Abram said, ‘Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?’ And Abram said, ‘You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.’ Then the word of the LORD came to him: ‘This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.’”
Proverbs 10:1 - “The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.”
Proverbs 15:20 - “A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.”
- Why it isn’t
Romans 8:19 - “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.”
Study Guide
Step One: Icebreaker (Optional)
Share about a favorite childhood memory of Christmas Eve.
Step Two: Open
Ask someone in your group to pray to open your time together. Ask another person to read 2 Corinthians 9:1-15.
Step Three: Discuss
1. What stood out to you the most in this weekend’s teaching? What was challenging, encouraging, or confusing to you?
2. Read Luke 1:32 and 35 and discuss the title that is described of Jesus in these verses.
3. How would you describe the difference between “Son of God” and “Son of Man” from what you heard during the weekend message?
4. Why does it matter that Jesus is fully God and fully man? Why does believing this truth affect the way we think and live?
5. Read John 1:14 and discuss who and where Jesus was before He “became flesh.” Why does the Bible’s definition of the Trinity make sense?
6. What would you say to evidentially support the arrival of the Messiah with the following Old Testament scriptures? Psalm 2:6-7; Psalm 89:26-27; Isaiah 9:6-7.
7. How does embracing Jesus as Son of God and Son of Man help you share the gospel this Christmas season with people who don’t yet know Him?
Step Four: Close in Prayer
Close in prayer and pray specifically for an opportunity to invite someone to a Christmas Eve service
at Orchard Hill Church this season.
