How does God’s sovereignty affect your will?
The sovereignty of God represents His ability to exercise a holy will. He is Most High, Lord of Heaven and earth, and has unlimited power to do what He pleases. We can always trust God to be good, faithful and just. In His sovereignty, God has also created us with a free will that has led to sin, death and destruction. We are empowered each day to choose to follow His will and way, or exercise our own.
God is Trustworthy | Numbers 23:19; Hebrews 6:13-20
God does nothing that would deny His own character. Since God is unchanging, His words always reflect His integrity. In all cases, God not only remains truthful, but keeps every oath and promise.
God is Good | James 1:13-18; 1 Corinthians 10:13
God cannot be overcome by evil. There is no element in His nature to which evil can make an appeal. While God will often test us, He tempts no one. In fact, God uses His unlimited power to enable us to resist and escape evil.
God is Faithful | Malachi 3:6; 1 Samuel 15:29; Romans 11:29
God does not deny or contradict Himself. God remains faithful to His covenant promises. Like God, His Word is unchanging. God does not revoke what He has given or discard who He has chosen.
God is Just | Romans 6:23; Matthew 26:39
God does not forgive sin without payment being made. Because God is just, He will not simply “wipe the slate clean”. Christ had to endure excruciating physical and spiritual agony to satisfy justice and pay the penalty of our sin.
God is Empowering | John 1:11–13
God does not force anyone to love Him, obey Him, or to receive His gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Every choice we make, from that of salvation to how we spend or invest our time, talents, and resources, is of our own free will.
