The Works of the Flesh

Being led by the Spirit will cause us to love

well and love well.

Ephesians 5:18–21
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. The result of being controlled by the Spirit is a life of praise, thanksgiving, and humility.

Galatians 5:19
Now the works of the flesh are evident …

Sexual sin
sexual immorality
impurity
sensuality

Religious/ritual sin
idolatry
sorcery

Social sin
enmity
strife
jealousy
fits of anger
rivalries
dissensions
divisions
envy

Substance-related sin
drunkenness
orgies (wild drinking parties)

Sexual sin violates God’s design for the

relationship.

Matthew 5:27–30
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

Religious or ritual sin violates God’s design for

, which should only be given to him.

Matthew 5:21–24
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”

Social sin violates God’s design for

relationships.

Substance-related sin gives up

of the mind and body for the purpose of escaping reality.
(See Ephesians 5:18-21 cited above.)

Galatians 5:21
… and things like these …

Galatians 5:21
… I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

These

works have no place in the life of a follower of Jesus.

Remember this: we

by faith and we by faith.

We are

through the Spirit and we are through the Spirit.
