- Share with the group a time when an event you took part in “didn’t live up to the hype”, at least the anticipation you had built up in your mind. On the other hand, can you think of an event that greatly outdid your expectations?
- Is there a difference between disappointment and discouragement? How might they be different, and how are they similar?
- When you consider the sources of discouragement presented in Nehemiah 4, which one(s) register with you as being the most likely to trip you up, and why?
- In saying “remember the Lord”, what do you think were some of the things that Nehemiah was calling to their memory? What ought we to remember when we are tempted to discouragement?
- When we think of the word “fight” as a possible response to discouragement and disappointment, it’s perhaps easy to think of the “culture wars” going on in our society, but focus instead on this: how might we “fight” for our families (Nehemiah 4:14) in ways other than fighting culture wars?
- Read Exodus 14. What is the great truth we glean from this chapter which helps us as we fight discouragement?
- Someone has said, “work like everything depends on you, and pray like everything depends on God.” Do you agree? How does this idea relate to defeating discouragement?
Close in prayer.
