Remember the Sabbath
Part of The Ten—Laws of Grace

Exodus 20:8-11

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

A PERSPECTIVE

The Hebrew word for Sabbath is “Sabbat”, which means to cease or to stop.

“…the seventh day was a Sabbath to the Lord your God.” —Exodus 20:10
“the Lord blessed the Sabbath day” —Exodus 20:11

A PERSPECTIVE

Principle #1 : Beware of moving from the essential presence and provision of God to believing you are essential.

Principle #2: Beware of exchanging an old slavery for a new slavery to work.

You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. —Deuteronomy 5:15

A PERSPECTIVE

Two Sabbath Days in the Life of Christ (as seen in Mark 2:23-3:3 and Luke 6:1-11)

TWO RESPONSES

  • ”The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27)
  • “The Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:28, Luke 6:5)

The most mature in Christ are not those who work the hardest , but those who rest the most consistently .
