Discussion Questions - Luke 6:20-26

  1. Do you think this is the same event or a different event as the Sermon on the Mount? (Matt. 5-7)
  2. Luke often “compresses” the narratives in His Gospel. What does that mean?
  3. Why might it be beneficial to remember that Jesus’ followers were not stenographers? How do we understand this and still believe that the Bible is completely inspired and perfect in what it contains?
  4. How do we know that these beatitudes and woes are more than simply practical and physical considerations?
  5. Jesus says “woe to you who are rich, well-fed and who laugh.” (v.24-25) Does Jesus not like people who have money, food and happiness? Why is He bringing these specific things up?
  6. Why is it unfortunate when everyone speaks well of you? (v.26)
  7. Who are these woes ultimately directed toward? Jesus’ disciples? The religious leaders? The world in general?
  8. How does a focus and dependence upon money hold one back from the Kingdom?
  9. What kind of fullness do you think Jesus was talking about here?
  10. What kind of laughter do you think Jesus was talking about here?
  11. Often, we simply think of prophecy as a foretelling of the future. Is that a substantial biblical understanding of it?
  12. Why were the false prophets loved and the true prophets hated?
  13. Focusing in on only the blessings and woes, how have you already noticed how radical Jesus’ teaching in this sermon is?
