More Than Rules
Week: 2
Part of Relational God

9 Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 ‘Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ 13 But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’” Luke 18:9-14

Religion says: “I must earn God’s approval.”

Relationship says: “I am accepted by God’s grace and mercy.”

Religion cares about looking righteous.

27 ‘What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity. 28 Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.’” Matthew 23:27-28

8 ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’” Matthew 15:8-9

A relationship with God transforms our hearts.

5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. ‘Zacchaeus!’ he said. ‘Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.’ 6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. ‘He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,’ they grumbled. 8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!’ 9 Jesus responded, ‘Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.’” Luke 19:5-10

Religion condemns us, a relationship with God restores us.

17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:17

3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4  ‘Teacher,’ they said to Jesus, ‘this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?’ 6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, ‘All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!’ 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, ‘Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?’ 11 ‘No, Lord,’ she said. And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I. Go and sin no more.’” John 8:3-11
