Hebrews 7:11-28 (NKJV) says 11Therefore, if

were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron? 12For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law. 13For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to , from which no man has officiated at the altar. 14For it is evident that our Lord arose from , of which tribe Moses spoke concerning priesthood. 15And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest 16who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. 17For He testifies: “You are a priest according to the order of Melchizedek.” 18For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, 19for the law made nothing ; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. 20And inasmuch as He was not made priest 21(for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him: “The Lord has sworn and will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek’ ”), 22by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a . 23Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make for them. 26For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up , first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up . 28For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been forever.

Q1 In the Messianic prophetic Psalm 110:4 (NKJV) king David says The Lord has sworn and will not relent, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” Who is ‘You’ and why?

Q2 Now, look at verse 11. Was the Levitical priesthood through the line of Aaron perfect? If not, explain why a new priesthood in another order was required. Notice the word ‘necessity’ in verse 12.

Q3 Look at verses 13 and 14. What was the consequence? An appointing to a high priest from another tribe?

Q4 Do you now understand why it is so difficult for Jews to accept God’s change of lineage for high priests based on genetics and rituals (from Levites to descendents of the tribe of Judah)? It cannot be justified by anything Moses said. Only a hint is given in Psalm 110:4, written by David. And only the New Testament (Hebrews) gives the evidence. Is that the reason for Melchizedek to arise as a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus (verses 15 and 16)?

Q5 In verse 17 God declares that His plan goes beyond genetics and rituals and is better and remains forever, based on the endless life in Jesus. Matthew 27:1 says When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. Where do you see the corrupted crual deeds of the old levitical priesthood?

Q6 Describe in your own words, according to verses 18 and 19, that God has something better in store than the levitical priesthood. The Law presented good moral standards. But did the Law make anything perfect (verses 19 and 22)?

Q7 There is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God through Jesus (verse 19). The temple with its veil is all about exclusion. In Jesus we are invited to come in. Do you live a legalistic life? Or are you set free?

Q8 What is the difference between an Aaronic rituals priesthood and an oath-based priesthood (verses 20-21)? Verse 22 talks about a better covenant. Include that in your answer.

Q9 How do we know that the priesthood of Jesus is forever (verses 23-25)?

Q10 Are you sure that Jesus is praying for you always (vs 25)?

Include the content of verses 26-28 in your thanksgiving closing prayer. And sing this song.
