The Fate of The False (Part One)

2 Peter 2:1-10
Pastor Steve Witt

I. False Teachers Will

[2 Peter 2:1-3]

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

v1 There will be false teachers among you
• Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
-1 John 4:1
• Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
- Matthew 7:15

v1 Who will secretly bring in destructive heresies
• For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
-2 Timothy 4:3-4

v1 Denying the Master who bought them
• For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
- Jude 1:4

v1 Bringing upon themselves swift destruction
• …in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might…
-2 Thessalonians 1:8-9

v2 Many will follow their sensuality
• You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
- James 4:4

v2 The way of truth will be blasphemed
• Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons…
-1 Timothy 4:1

v3 Their greed they will exploit you with false words
• …and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
-1 Timothy 6:5

v3 Their destruction is not asleep
• For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
- Matthew 16:27

II. False Forerunners Were

– True Followers Were
[2 Peter 2:4-9]

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones…

v4 God did not spare angels when they sinned
• And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.
- Revelation 19:20

v4 Cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment
• And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day—
- Jude 1:6

v5 If he did not spare the ancient world
• Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
- Luke 17:26-27

v5 But preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness
• Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
- Genesis 6:9

• By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
- Hebrews 11:7

v6 Turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction
• Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven.
- Genesis 19:24
• …just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
- Jude 1:7

v6 Making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly
• Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.
-1 Corinthians 10:6-8

v7 He rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked
• And as they brought them out, one said, “Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.”
- Genesis 19:17

v9 The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials
• The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
- Proverbs 18:10

v9 (The Lord knows how) keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment
• But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.
- Romans 2:5

v10 Those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority
• Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones.
- Jude 1:8

v10 Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones
• For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
-2 Timothy 3:2-5

THE LORD’S SUPPER

22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Mark 14:22-25
