QUESTION:
What’s something that you treasure?

Why do you treasure it?

KNOW:
There’s a fine line between a treasure and an idol.

LUKE 11:53-54 — As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.

LUKE 12:1 — Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy (an actor and/or one who plays a part).”

LUKE 12:13 — Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

KNOW:
● Greed hides behind words like frugal, thrifty, economical, cautious and sensible.
● Sins of the heart lead to other sins.

What’s is an idol? It is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give.” —Tim Keller

LUKE 12:14-21 — Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop (already rich). He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’”

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’”

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’”

“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

QUESTION:
What do you treasure? Why?

It’s revealed in where you spend money, time, and brain space.

KNOW:
● Foolishness is allowing the pursuit of (fill-in the blank) over the health of our soul!
● Pursuing stuff means you’re not pursuing God.
● No earthly treasure can save you.

“Your Messiah is ever faithful; maybe your struggle of faith comes from the fact that you don’t really value what He’s working to produce in your heart and life.” —Paul David Tripp

REMINDER:
You are valuable to a Holy God!

LUKE 12:22-34 — “They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?”

“Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!”

“And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.”

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor.”

“Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

EFFECTS OF WORRY:
● Anxious: to be torn apart, (like a ship in a storm).
● We focus less people and more on accumulation of stuff.
● Worry is a terrible god.
● Worry/fear reveals a lot about our theology.

HOW DO WE FACE WORRY?
Find peace in the promises of God. If a powerful and loving God has promised to meet your needs, there is nothing to be afraid of!

Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength. —Corrie Ten Boom

RESPONSE:
● What do you treasure?
● Do you know that you are treasured by Him?
