Key Verses: Matthew 19:16-26

1. Misconception: “Financial Blessing is a sign that someone is ‘right with God.’”

a. Read Matthew 19:16-26: What do we learn about wealth relative to eternal life from verses 16-17?

b. What is the significance of this young man calling Jesus good? What is good? How does our understanding of “good” cause problems in life? How can correctly understanding what is good help us witness to the unsaved?

c. Why does Jesus tell this young man to keep the commandments when we know from Paul in Romans 8:2-3 that the law cannot save because of the weakness of the flesh? And again in Romans 3:20, “…by the deeds of the law, no flesh will be justified?” See also James 2:10

d. Some think that Jesus came to “destroy the law.” What do we learn from Jesus in Matthew 5:17-18? Why is this important for us to understand?

e. Some think that the commandment is no longer relevant post-Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. What do we learn regarding this misconception from Romans 13:8-13?

f. In verses 18-19, Why does Jesus leave out the commandments relating to our relationship with God? See also verse 21. How does verse 22 show this young man violated at least one of the first four of the Ten Commandments?

g. Read verses 23-26; what can we gather from Jesus’ discussion with the disciples?
