When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets. ”Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. —Matthew 16:13-18 (NLT)
Who is Jesus?
Jesus is Our
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.” —John 15:12-17
We are friends when
Read the Bible
Tips for reading the Bible
1. Quit trying to read too much at one time
2. Ask yourself, what is ONE THING I can put into practice today?
3. Write down the one thing you’re going to practice each day or each week, so you can go back and reference it
4. Trust that EVERY word in the Bible is good for you…the ones you understand and the ones you don’t
Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit
We are friends because He
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” —John 10:27
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” —James 4:8
Listening is ALWAYS worth it
Barriers to Friendship
We don’t fear Him
“The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.” —Psalms 25:14
We don’t believe what He says is actually best for us
“and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness’ – and he was called a friend of God.” —James 2:23
We try to be friends with the world
“You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” —James 4:4
