Gospel = euangelion (Greek) = good news (literal translation) =
the Good News of Jesus Christ

If there’s good news, there must also be

news.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God—Romans 3:23 (ESV)
For the wages of sin is death….—Romans 6:23 (ESV)
5… we are not godly. We are constant sinners; how can people like us be saved? 6We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.—Isaiah 64:5-6 (NLT)

We are all in the same spiritual boat – we have all

, we’ve all broken the Law of God, and the punishment for sin, any sin, is death, which is the ultimate separation from God.

3The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.—Romans 8:3-4 (NLT)

Jesus’s death on the cross paid the price for our sins, cleansing us and

us Christ’s righteousness, not by our actions but his full, perfect and complete sacrifice on the cross.

Jesus: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.—John 3:16 (ESV)
[Jesus] was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.—Romans 4:25 (NLT)
3I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. 4He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. 5He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. 6After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.—1 Corinthians 15:3-6 (NLT)

Some Important Points About The Gospel:

  1. Paul

the gospel and then passed it on.

  2. The gospel is “

    important.”

  3. There are

    to this gospel.

  4. All this happened just as “

    said.”

8God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.—Ephesians 2:8-10 (NLT)

This passage tells us our

is to do the “good things he planned for us long ago.”

THE GREAT COMMISSION

Jesus: 18…All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.—Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

What Is Jesus Telling Us In The Great Commission?

  • Those who are his, who follow him, who call themselves Christians by receiving the gospel by faith, that he has God the Creator’s “authority” to us, to order our lives, and we are to him.
  • He commands us, his followers, to “go,” meaning we’re to take , not simply wait passively for someone to come along.
  • We are to the gospel with others so that they hear the good news and have the opportunity to also respond by faith as we have.
  • We are not disciples until we are allowing God to use us to other disciples who are learning what they’re taught and obeying Jesus.
  • He will always be in this journey of making disciples.

Jesus: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.—Acts 1:8 (NLT)

As long as I look at Christianity and following Jesus as just being about what

getting out of it, I’m missing half the story.

Our actions to share the gospel with others doesn’t become a way simply to please God but a way to love others as God

loved me through others.

Receiving the Good News is being so excited about what we’ve found, and so convinced that it will make a difference in another’s life, that we feel like it’s the best thing since slice bread, or since

!

CHALLENGE: Reflect on your own experiences of how Jesus has worked in your life and share them with at least one other person as a way to express love and gratitude to God for what He’s done.
